SOUTH CAROLINA BASICS

What newcomers ask.

  • Social Security is not taxed by South Carolina.
  • Military retirement income can be fully deducted.
  • Retirement income deduction: up to $3,000 a year before 65 and up to $10,000 at 65+, plus an age-65 deduction of up to $15,000.
  • Your primary home can be assessed at 4% instead of 6% — you must apply with your county assessor; it does not carry over from the seller.
  • At 65+, the Homestead Exemption removes the first $50,000 of your home’s value from property taxes after one year of SC residency.
